Oil on canvas, signed “G. Lépaulle” and dated 1849 in the lower right corner (partially obscured by the frame’s rebate).
The subject is identified on the back of the frame with a few additional notes regarding his siblings:
“André Henri Gaillard 1841–1906, brother of Marie Blanche, wife of Hypolyte, Marquis de Persfrais? and of Marie Jeanne Gaillard”
The bust portrait of the young boy stands out against a light background of sky and a wooded park in autumnal colors.
Original Louis XVI-style frame gilded with gold leaf (two layers of gold).

Guillaume François-Gabriel Lépaulle (1804–1886): A student of Horace Vernet for a time, Lépaulle entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1819 upon the recommendation of his principal teachers, Bertin and de Regnault. Having exhibited for the first time at the 1824 Salon, he specialized in history and genre painting, but above all in portraiture. He produced a considerable number of portraits and exhibited them at nearly every Salon between 1827 and 1879.
 Lépaulle possessed undeniable talent, as highlighted, for example, by the *Journal des Beaux-Arts et de la Littérature* in 1839: “… his ease, his skill with the brush, his rich and brilliant color, and his astonishing ability to render details… .” He is represented in the galleries of Versailles by full-length portraits of Admiral de Rigny, the Duke of Plaisance, and Napoleon III. He is also responsible for the paintings in the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Chapel at the Church of Saint-Merry.
