Portrait Of A Dog By Jules Chardigny, 19th Century

Portrait of a Grand Griffon Vendéen by Jules Chardigny.
Oil on panel signed upper left, 19th century.
Original gilt stucco frame.
Jules Chardigny was born in London in 1842.

He was the son of the sculptor Pierre Joseph Chardigny. Initially a pupil of his father, he later became a student of Thomas Couture. He began exhibiting in 1864 and participated for the last time in the Salon in 1885, the year he submitted a painting. Chardigny seems to have specialized in depicting dogs; his work offers us some interesting portraits of them. He died in 1892 in Paris. Ref: Bénézit, Akoun.
